Audiobook, read by Justis Bolding & Victoria Villarreal.
I read this book as an audiobook via my local library and the Hoopla app. It was narrated by Justis Bolding and Victoria Villarreal.
I felt for these girls and I won't lie and say I wasn't triggered. Too many of the things that Dad and Amber said were eerily familiar to things a parent said to me. In that, very believable. Sadly.
Modern books that take place in modern times have a lot of the work in world-building done for them, but Leigh took time to give us details about the grounds, the school, etc. In the writing, being first person from dual perspectives, I had a bit of trouble because the narrators sounded so similar, but the way the sisters said their thoughts was different. The plot was twisty and routinely kept me on my toes. I didn't want to stop for sleep.
From the standpoint of grieving teen girls who lost their mother, to a mid-life crisis-ing dad who care more about getting his rocks off with the nubile assistant to deceased wife and her abhorrent behavior, I tracked every logical step, even when to the outside world, the girls didn't seem logical. I felt deeply where they were coming from. I truly enjoyed this work and recommend it to anyone who has felt trapped by parental choices.
